How to use this calculator
Use this calculator for a rectangular deck with straight, parallel surface boards. Choose the board direction, then enter the actual board face width and planned installed gap for the product and project. Add an optional stock length only when you want a row-by-row board-count estimate.

Formula and methodology
Deck area = length × width. Board direction sets the board run length and the perpendicular coverage width. Because N rows create N − 1 internal gaps, rows = (coverage width + gap) ÷ (actual board face width + gap), rounded up. Installed decking length = rows × run length. When stock length is entered, boards per row = run length ÷ stock length, rounded up; calculated stock-board count = rows × boards per row; estimated purchase quantity adds the selected extra percentage and rounds up.
Important: This calculator estimates rectangular deck surface-board material only. It does not determine framing, joists, beams, posts, ledgers, spans, loads, footings, fasteners, guards, stairs, structural suitability, permits, code compliance, or installation safety.
How accurate is this estimate?
Deck area, board rows, and installed linear footage are calculated from the dimensions, direction, actual board width, and gap entered. Stock-board quantity also depends on the entered stock length and uses a conservative row-by-row estimating method rather than an optimized cut plan. Actual quantities may vary because of cuts, seam placement, border treatments, openings, stairs, damaged material, product dimensions, installation systems, and manufacturer requirements. The selected extra percentage is a user-controlled planning allowance.
Worked example
Example calculation only — the dimensions, board width, gap, stock length, and extra percentage demonstrate the calculator math and are not construction or product recommendations.
For a 16 ft × 12 ft rectangular deck with boards running along the 16 ft length, deck area is 192 sq ft and coverage width is 144 in. An entered 5.5 in face width and 0.125 in gap give ceil((144 + 0.125) ÷ (5.5 + 0.125)) = 26 rows. Installed decking length is 26 × 16 = 416 linear ft. An entered 16 ft stock length gives 1 board per row and 26 calculated stock boards. A selected 10% extra gives ceil(26 × 1.10) = 29 estimated purchase boards. If the entered stock length were 12 ft instead, the same layout would calculate 2 boards per row, 52 stock boards, and 58 estimated purchase boards after the selected 10% extra.
Before you buy
- Use actual product dimensions rather than nominal board names, and verify the installed gap that applies to the decking product and installation conditions.
- The stock-board estimate treats each row independently. It does not optimize offcut reuse, design seam placement, verify joints over framing, or determine fastening requirements.
- Version 1 excludes diagonal, herringbone, chevron, picture-frame, breaker-board, stair, railing, fascia, skirting, and opening layouts.

Frequently asked questions
How many deck boards do I need?
The calculator first determines board rows from the perpendicular coverage width, actual board face width, and planned gap. When you enter a stock length, it estimates whole boards for each row and then applies your selected extra allowance.
How does board width affect the estimate?
A wider actual face width covers more of the perpendicular deck dimension per row and can reduce the row count. Enter the product’s actual installed face width rather than relying only on a nominal board name.
Does spacing between deck boards matter?
Yes. The entered gap is included between adjacent board rows using an N − 1 gap model. No perimeter or edge gap is added automatically, and the calculator does not recommend a spacing value.
Should deck boards run lengthwise or widthwise?
Choose the direction planned for your layout. Direction changes the board run length and perpendicular coverage width, which can change row and stock-board counts. The calculator does not recommend or structurally validate either direction.
What board width should I enter?
Enter the actual installed face width for the decking product you plan to use. Product specifications should control; nominal board names may not equal actual dimensions.
What stock-board length should I enter?
Enter the length you actually plan to purchase from the supplier. Leave it blank when you only want deck area, row count, and installed linear footage. The calculator does not assume which stock lengths are available.
How much extra decking should I buy?
The editable extra percentage is a planning choice for cuts, damage, and measurement variation. Select the allowance appropriate for your layout and product, including zero if desired.
Does this calculator estimate joists or footings?

Can it calculate diagonal or patterned decking?
