How to use this calculator

Enter the project surface dimensions and actual paver face size to estimate a whole-paver purchase count. Optional base and bedding depths provide geometric material volumes without applying the paver waste allowance.

  1. Measure the rectangular patio, walkway, or similar pedestrian area.
  2. Enter the paver face length and width using the dimension shown for the product.
  3. Adjust the paver-only extra allowance for cuts, breakage, and layout.
  4. Review the editable gravel-base and bedding-sand depths, or enter zero to omit either material.

Formula and methodology

Project area = length × width. Exact pavers = project area ÷ paver face area. Recommended pavers = exact pavers × (1 + selected extra percentage ÷ 100), rounded up. Gravel or sand volume = project area × selected depth; cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27.

Important: This calculator estimates material quantities for patios, walkways, and similar pedestrian areas. It is not structural, drainage, soil-bearing, freeze-depth, driveway, or engineering guidance.

How accurate is this estimate?

Project area, paver face area, and geometric material volumes come from the dimensions entered. Actual needs may vary because of cuts, patterns, joint spacing, edges, compaction, soil conditions, installation method, and manufacturer requirements.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 10 ft project covers 200 sq ft. With 12 in × 12 in pavers, the exact estimate is 200 pavers and 10% extra gives 220 pavers. A 4 in gravel depth is about 66.67 cu ft (2.47 cu yd), while 1 in of bedding sand is about 16.67 cu ft (0.62 cu yd).

Does the paver extra percentage apply to gravel or sand?

No. It applies only to the recommended paver count. Gravel and bedding sand use project area multiplied by the selected depth.

Why are base and bedding depths editable?

Installation requirements vary by project use, soil, climate, product, and system. The initial values are planning defaults; manufacturer instructions or a qualified installer should control.

Does paver size include joint spacing?

The calculator uses the entered paver face area and does not add a joint-width correction. Patterns, joints, cuts, and edge conditions can affect the actual quantity.
