How to use this calculator
Measure a rectangular lawn to find its area, then choose an extra allowance for trimming or irregular edges. Supplier coverage fields are optional because sod may be sold as rolls, slabs, pieces, or pallets in different sizes.
- Measure the lawn length and width at their longest rectangular dimensions.
- Adjust the extra allowance to suit the shape and amount of trimming you expect.
- If available, enter the square-foot coverage listed by your supplier for one roll, piece, or pallet.
- Use the recommended order area when discussing quantity and packaging with the supplier.
Formula and methodology
Lawn area = length × width. Recommended order area = lawn area × (1 + selected extra percentage ÷ 100). Optional roll, piece, and pallet counts divide the recommended area by supplier-entered coverage and round up.
Important: This calculator estimates quantity for a rectangular area. It does not select turf, provide lawn-treatment advice, or guarantee installation results.
How accurate is this estimate?
The measured lawn area comes directly from the dimensions entered, and the recommended order adds your selected extra percentage. Roll, piece, and pallet estimates depend on the supplier coverage you enter because package sizes vary.
Worked example
A 50 ft × 40 ft lawn covers 2,000 sq ft. With 5% extra selected, the recommended order is 2,100 sq ft. If a supplier lists 10 sq ft per piece and 450 sq ft per pallet, that order is 210 pieces or 5 pallets after rounding up.
