How to use this calculator

Geometric gravel volume does not require a density assumption. If a supplier provides density for the specific material, enter it to add an approximate weight; otherwise leave the field blank and use the volume results.

  1. Measure the rectangular coverage area.
  2. Enter the planned finished gravel depth.
  3. If available, enter the density supplied for the specific gravel product.
  4. Use volume as the primary estimate and treat any calculated weight as approximate.

Formula and methodology

Volume = length × width × depth. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. When density is entered, estimated pounds = cubic feet × entered density, and US short tons = pounds ÷ 2,000. Recommended values include only the selected extra percentage.

Important: Weight is approximate. Gravel density varies with material, particle size, gradation, void space, compaction, and moisture.

How accurate is this estimate?

Area and volume are calculated directly from your measurements. The recommended volume adds only your selected extra-material percentage. Pounds and US short tons are shown only when you enter a product or supplier density, and both remain approximate; confirm density and ordering units with the supplier before purchasing.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 12 ft area at 3 in deep is 240 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 60 cu ft, or about 2.22 cu yd. With 10% extra selected, the recommendation is 66 cu ft, or about 2.44 cu yd. Weight remains omitted unless material density is entered.

Frequently asked questions

Why is gravel density editable?

There is no single exact density for all gravel. A local supplier’s value for the specific product is more useful than a universal assumption.

Can I calculate gravel without knowing its density?

Yes. Leave density blank to calculate cubic feet and cubic yards without displaying a weight estimate.

How do I convert pounds to tons?

For U.S. short tons, divide pounds by 2,000. Confirm which ton definition your supplier uses.

Should depth be entered before or after compaction?

Enter the finished depth you want, then use an extra-material allowance and supplier guidance to account for compaction.
